In a move that surprised many, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a ride on the Delhi Metro to attend the centenary celebrations of Delhi University on June 30, 2023.
The Prime Minister was seen interacting with fellow passengers, most of them youngsters, during his metro ride from Lok Kalyan Marg metro station to Vishwavidyalaya metro station.

He shared photos of his journey on his Twitter profile, expressing his happiness to have young people as his fellow passengers. “Happy to have youngsters as my co-passengers,” the PM tweeted, sharing a few pictures of his interaction with students inside the metro coach.
Upon reaching the university, PM Modi was expected to attend the closing ceremony of the centenary celebrations as the chief guest. The celebrations were launched on May 1, 2022, on the occasion of the university’s foundation day.
During the program, the Prime Minister was scheduled to lay the foundation stone of three buildings and release a set of coffee table books.
The buildings, equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, would be for the faculty of technology, computer centre, and academic block. Delhi University has introduced B.Tech programmes from the upcoming academic session with a capacity of 360 students. The building for the faculty of technology will cater to them.
The event was also attended by Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan, who was the guest of honour.
A three-tier security system was put in place with the deployment of more than 1,000 paramilitary and police personnel for the Prime Minister’s visit.
No black dresses, compulsory attendance, and suspension of classes between 10 am to 12 pm were among the guidelines issued by Delhi University colleges for the live telecast of the closing ceremony of the university’s centenary celebrations.
However, the Delhi University administration clarified that they had not made attendance compulsory.
